This month, Babies of Homelessness celebrates its 3rd birthday. Happy Birthday, team!! 🎂 🥳
None of this would be possible if not for the vision by the organization’s Founder and Chair, Star Lalario.
As a child who experienced homelessness and shelters growing up, she felt she needed to do something.
After hearing a news story about a 2-year-old girl eating doughnuts off the ground at a Seattle encampment, she began assembling care packages in her living room and went out with the Union Gospel Mission to distribute them. She discovered, there were actually more families with children who were unsheltered, out of sight from the public.
Word quickly spread. Agencies were calling Star because they couldn’t get basics from other staffed and well funded organizations fast enough. Neighbors started dropping off donations on her doorstep. Community members called her anytime they saw a family in need.
The need was huge and Star realized she needed to grow a team to expand basic needs services to more families. In 2016, the organization formed its first board and Babies of Homelessness was born.
Today, Babies of Homelessness is exclusively a direct service provider of basic needs to families experiencing homelessness in two counties. No red tape • No waitlist • The child’s needs are always a priority. Our organization has served close to 3k families, distributed 100,000 diapers and made 350 deliveries.
